Best Laptops for Microsoft Office

Microsoft office is at the pinnacle of documentation applications globally. It has become intertwined with our daily lives and is an inseparable documentation tool for most users. Apart from being partially free, the software has evolved completely over the last decade. From facilitating local storage and modifications, the modern Microsoft office allows you to integrate it one drive, sign in with your Microsoft account and securely create your documents. To protect its users from security threats, Microsoft office opens each file in a protected mode which sandboxes the file from infecting or attacking your system unless you allow it.

It is evident that Microsoft office is an inseparable documentation application that holds far more importance in every computer than we can possibly imagine. The evolution of Microsoft office is appreciable but the software has become very demanding as compared to the early versions like the Microsoft office 2007. With the new version, you get a great set of features but also need a good system that can run the applications at full speed. You may have noticed how the newer versions of Microsoft office struggle on an old windows system or laptop that has a low-end configuration.

In 2021, it would be a bad decision to opt for low-end laptops that can barely run Microsoft office 2013 and above. The application will run on them, no doubt about that, but the sluggish performance of the application in basic tasks like opening files, multiple files, copying, or making editorial changes will hamper your productivity. For a professional who is adept at handling Microsoft Office applications, a slow-performance laptop will not suffice.

Let’s look at various factors in a laptop that can affect your productivity in Microsoft office.

  • Display

While choosing a laptop for Microsoft office as a primary factor, the display makes a pivotal role. This decade demands 1080 pixels as your base resolution because most applications support it. A 1080pixel resolution display also looks good as it has twice the pixels as a standard 720-pixel display. A lower-end resolution laptop will most likely be paired with low-end configuration components, so I would advise against that choice. If you want a crisp, unaltered view of the application and do not want the fonts to appear blurry, 1080 pixel is a go-to option.

Display size is crucial while purchasing a laptop for Microsoft office. I would advise you to not purchase a 12-inch screen display or less because the Microsoft Office applications will appear crammed if you run it on such a tiny display. It is advisable to opt for a display size of 13 inches and above, that is easily able to display all the menus and toolbars without shrinking the interface.

  • Processor

According to the system requirements, Microsoft office can run on a dual-core processor. Any processor with a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz and above can run the application. However, I have a decade-long experience with Microsoft office 2013 on a core i3 processor and let me assure you that more than 3 simultaneous files can cause your explorer to crash multiple times. It is advisable to get a four-core processor if you are not on a stringent budget. I would not recommend Qualcomm processors which are found in Chrome books as they can only run the web version. Also reintroduced Pentium gold and silver series processors should be off your list when selecting the best laptop for Microsoft office.

  • Memory

It is crucial to note that Microsoft office recommends a 4GB memory module for running it on a 64-bit operating system. It means that on windows 10 or a macOS (Big Sur) you need 4 GB RAM at least. If you factor in multitasking, merely 4 GB will not be enough as 35 percent of it is consumed by the background services. I would recommend 8 GB RAM, preferably DDR4 to use Microsoft office without any hiccups.

  • Operating system

Unless you are using the latest version of Microsoft office, any operating system will suffice. For using Microsoft office 2019, you need a windows 10 operating system, or the latest version from macOS, to be able to run it without any compatibility issues. You cannot use Microsoft office 2019 in laptops that use Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 as their operating system.

  • Hard Disk space

Microsoft office can run on a traditional SATA interface hard disk drive. It would be difficult to find laptops that do not have an SSD, even an older SATA one in modern age laptops. So, hard disk isn’t a major issue if you need to run Microsoft office 2019.

  • Graphics Card

Microsoft office can use hardware acceleration if available but does not rely heavily on the graphics processor. Modern inbuilt graphics processor by Intel or AMD can easily run it without any frame drops or pixelation issue.

Is Microsoft Office available on all laptops?

It is a very common question as most users think that they will get Microsoft office for free if they purchase a windows 10 laptop. The Microsoft office comes bundled with Windows 10, no doubt about that, but it is a limited trial version valid up to only 30 days. After 30 days the user needs to manually purchase a licensed copy to continue using the applications with maximum features. Microsoft is very stern with the trial period and disables the application immediately as the trial expires.

That being said, some manufacturers bundle the office version 2016 and 2019 with their laptops. They are scarce to find but come with lifetime validity for Windows 10 and Microsoft office. I will list a few options that come with the latest version of Microsoft office with lifetime validity down below.

Office 2019 minimum system requirements

Windows 10

  • 1.6 GHz or faster, 2-core processor, 2.0 GHz or faster recommended for Skype for Business
  • 4 GB RAM for 64-bit; 2 GB RAM for 32-bit
  • 4.0 GB free disk space
  • 1280 x 768 or higher screen resolution
  • Windows 10, Windows Server 2019
  • Graphics hardware acceleration requires DirectX 9 or later, with WDDM 2.0 or higher for Windows 10
  • You might need to install .NET 3.5 or 4.6 and higher to use some features.
  • Office 2019 cannot be installed alongside Office 2016.

macOS System Requirements

  • Operating System: macOS 10.12 (Sierra) or greater. Office for Mac is supported on the three most recent versions of macOS. As new major versions of macOS are made generally available, Microsoft will drop support for the oldest version and support the newest and previous two versions of macOS.
  • Processor: Intel processor.
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM.
  • Storage: 10 GB of available disk space.
  • Display: 1280×800 screen resolution.
  • Please note that Microsoft Office 2019 is not supported on the newer Apple M1 processors, as of now.

Based on the above system requirements, I have curated the list of best laptops for Microsoft Office. It includes a few laptops that come with a lifetime Microsoft Office subscription.

Let us explore each of the above mentioned laptops in detail and why they are among the best when it comes to selecting a laptop for Microsoft Office.

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 is the second one on our list for the best laptops for Microsoft office. There are a few reasons why I have kept this laptop in the second position. The first one is that it is incredibly functional, fully equipped with a touch screen, a tenth generation Intel core i3 processor, and a robust chassis. Apart from that it can fold up to 360 degrees and can be used in tablet mode and tent mode making it perfect for traversing long excel sheets with your stylus.

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 is on the premium side of laptops and can be called an ultrabook due to its thin and light form factor. The laptop weighs just 1.5 kilograms and comes with all the necessary ports and connectivity options for a working professional and a student. Like many ultrabooks, the laptop comes with a convertible display with a 360-degree rotating hinge. The laptop has a fourteen-inch FHD display with narrow bezels that help it achieve an 82 percent screen-to-body ratio. Not many laptops are able to fit a fourteen-inch display in a 13.3-inch chassis but this one does.

Even with incredibly slim bezels, the laptop manages to fit a webcam on the top bezel. It is a tall display and is responsive to touch. I would advise you to get a stylus as the screen can sustain damage with fingernails. The display is a gorgeous FULL HD panel with a glossy display and vibrant color production. It can go up to 250 nits of brightness and is perfectly usable indoors.

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 has one of the best connectivity options for users. It is one of the few laptops to feature a dedicated power button and volume rocker on the side, making it easy to use in tablet mode. The laptop provides two latest generations fast USB type-A ports with an additional USB 2.0 one. You also get a USB type-C port and an HDMI port for connecting to external displays and projectors. For wireless connectivity, the laptop comes with a Wi-Fi 6 card that provides uninterrupted internet connectivity. There is also a Bluetooth version 5.1 available but no ethernet port for direct LAN connectivity.

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 has a tactile LED-backlit keyboard that comes with large keys. Being a fourteen-inch laptop, it lacks a dedicated number pad. The trackpad is also fairly large and can easily understand multi-point gestures. It also uses a fingerprint sensor for direct login to the laptop. You can also do the same by using the windows hello login feature. The security mechanism on the laptop is top-notch and will protect your data at all times.

The laptop comes with a fast Intel Core i5 processor, which is the latest tenth generation one. You might be wondering if the i5 processor can handle the workload of Microsoft office, and in a short answer “yes”. The tenth generation processors have higher optimization and are suited for the Microsoft applications such as teams, one drive, Microsoft office, etc. The laptop comes bundled with Microsoft office 2019 and that too with lifetime validity.

The processor is paired with 8 GB DDR4 memory that is fast and efficient in multitasking. It also comes with a PCIe SSD of 512 GB which is blazing fast for storage and applications and is enough for storing large files. The laptop comes with integrated Intel UHD graphics and will pose no problem in running Full HD content or Microsoft office. It also comes with a fast-charging battery that can charge up to 60 percent in just 50 minutes. Overall, the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 is a great convertible laptop with decent specifications, a touch display for managing daily documentation and productivity.

Lenovo ThinkPad E14  is another great contender on our list for the best laptops for Microsoft office. The ThinkPad series is renowned for delivering the ultimate business experience and is mostly favored by professionals. The laptop excels in the specifications department but performs poorly in the aesthetics department. The design of the ThinkPad, in 2021, is reminiscent of a laptop from early 2010, and it is not an appealing sight to behold.

The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 is a sturdy laptop and comes with a military standard durability certification. The certification makes it impervious to high temperature and pressure and enables it to protect your data using a secure TPM chip. Business documents, ledgers, reports are confidential and must be kept away from prodding eyes. The laptop is built to last, goes all the way back to 180 degrees, and weighs, 1.6 kg which is portable for a fourteen-inch laptop.

The laptop adopts the two-sided narrow bezel display that presents more area for the display. The top bezel houses a 720 HD webcam that has a great overall quality due to the two microphones present alongside it. The webcam comes with a privacy shutter that obstructs the webcam when not in use. It uses a full HD display that comes with a 1080 pixel resolution and anti-glare property. The display is fourteen inches in size and is wide enough to work with Microsoft office with ease.

Lenovo ThinkPad E14 is a great laptop when it comes to using it specifically for documentation purposes. It has a great keyboard with tactile keys that are seldom found on a keyboard at this price range. The keys are LED backlit meaning you don’t have to add another USB light to work in the dark. It also has dedicated function buttons for navigating Skype which makes it easier to attend business meetings. One more advantage of the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 is that it has a TrackPoint located at the heart of the keyboard which makes scrolling and clicking a bit easier as you do not have to shift to the TrackPoint much. The trackpad is a windows precision one and has a different button layout which is located at the top for some reason.

Being a work machine, the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 stresses the security aspect. You get a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button that facilitates easy login to your system. It also has a TPM 2.0 chip to encrypt your documents and files and save them from unauthorized access. Moving on to the I/O section, the laptop certainly does not disappoint at all. You get four USB ports, one of them being the nimble USB Type-C one along with an HDMI and an RJ45 ethernet port. The laptop sheds the SD card reader and it is of no use to a professional working in the documentation field. It also has a Kensington lock slot if you want to secure it to your desk.

The laptop uses the latest-gen Intel Core i5 processor to power itself. It is a four-core processor, which is enough to handle multiple instances of Microsoft applications with ease. It comes with 8 gigs of DDR4 memory which is an apt pairing considering the processor. The laptop employs a 256SSD in tandem with a 1 TB SATA hard disk drive, thus providing 1.25 TB of storage space for your data. It also comes with an integrated Intel UHD graphics card that is fit to run the display at 1080 pixel resolution without any problem.

The laptop has a fast wireless connectivity option and comes with a Wi-Fi 6 card from Intel, which is the best you can get on a laptop. It also comes with Bluetooth version 5.0 in addition to Wi-Fi 6. The laptop promises a battery backup of 12.5 hours with the Lenovo battery management application but you should expect 6-7 hours on moderate usage. It supports fast charging and can easily charge up to 80 percent capacity in just an hour. The manufacturers also bundle Microsoft Office 2019 with the laptop, making it a great option if you are looking for the best laptops for Microsoft Office.

Conclusion

These were our best picks for the best laptops for Microsoft office. Dell Vostro and Asus remain our top picks because of the competent internals and lightweight body that enables you to carry it to your office on a frequent basis. They also come with Microsoft Office preinstalled, saving you the trouble of purchasing an external license.
